Tasks Homeowners Should Be Doing Every Month

By DiCharry Homes - 8-22-2023

Regular home maintenance is important to keep your home in good condition and prevent potential issues from becoming major problems. Your home should never be a burden and it should always be a haven. The key to making sure that your Dicharry home remains in good repair and making sure that large repairs never come as a surprise, is maintenance. With that being said, here are some home maintenance tasks that homeowners should be doing on a monthly basis.

Check and Replace HVAC Filters

Monthly, check the filters in your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. If they are dirty, replace them to improve indoor air quality and HVAC efficiency.

Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Test the batteries and functionality of smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. Replace batteries if needed.

Clean Range Hood Filters

If you have a range hood over your stove, clean or replace its filters to prevent grease buildup and ensure proper ventilation.

Clear Sink and Shower Drains

Use drain cleaners or natural remedies to prevent clogs in sinks, showers, and bathtub drains.

Check for Plumbing Leaks

Inspect faucets, under sinks, and around toilets for any signs of leaks. Address leaks promptly to prevent water damage.

Clean Garbage Disposal

Run a mixture of baking soda and vinegar through your garbage disposal to clean and deodorize it.

Inspect Exterior

Check the exterior of your home for signs of damage, such as cracks in the foundation, damaged siding, or missing shingles.

Check Window and Door Seals

Inspect the weatherstripping and seals around windows and doors. Replace or repair any damaged or worn seals to improve energy efficiency.

Clean Refrigerator Coils

Vacuum or brush the coils behind or underneath your refrigerator to improve its efficiency and prolong its lifespan.

Organize and Declutter

Regularly declutter and organize areas like closets, storage rooms, and cabinets to maintain a tidy living environment.

Inspect and Clean Dryer Vents

Remove lint from the dryer's lint trap and exhaust vent. Built-up lint can pose a fire hazard.

Inspect Attic and Basement

Check your attic and basement for signs of pests, water leaks, or mold. Address issues promptly to prevent further damage.

By consistently performing these monthly home maintenance tasks, you can help keep your home in good condition and catch potential problems early, ultimately saving you time and money in the long run. The good news is that most of these tasks don’t require a lot of time or effort either. Spread them out over the month and you should be able to complete all these chores with ease!
